Whatnot Policy: Surprise Sets vs. Mystery Bags

⚠️ DISCLAIMER & POLICY DISCLOSURE The information provided below is for educational and general informational purposes only and does not constitute official platform compliance or legal advice. Whatnot regularly updates its Terms of Service, Community Guidelines, and live streaming policies. Following these guidelines does not guarantee immunity from account penalties. Users must independently consult the official, up-to-date Whatnot Policy Hub and review current platform guidelines before hosting a live stream. The creator of this document assumes no liability for any enforcement actions, listing removals, or account bans issued by Whatnot.

Whatnot strictly prohibits traditional “mystery bags” or “mystery boxes.” To sell items where the exact outcome is unknown to the buyer at the time of purchase, sellers must use the official Surprise Sets format.

1. Key Differences

Feature Old “Mystery Bag” Format (Prohibited) New “Surprise Set” Format (Compliant) Randomization Seller manually pulls a numbered bag, spins a physical wheel, or uses a gumball machine. In-app Whatnot randomizer only. The app digitally assigns the product to the buyer instantly upon purchase. Concealment Items are hidden inside opaque bags, wrapped boxes, or numbered containers. Concealed containers are banned. All items must remain fully visible on-camera throughout the live show.I nventory Transparency Vague descriptions are given (e.g., “5 items worth $50!”). Full detailed checklist required. The listing description must list the Brand, exact Product Name, Condition, and Quantity of every item in the pool.Item VarietyBags contain mixed items (e.g., a “Disney box” with a pin, a lanyard, and a plush). Same product type only. Categories cannot be mixed. An apparel set must be all shirts, or all pants—not a mix of both.Value AdvertisingSellers advertise a “Floor” (minimum value), “Ceiling” (maximum value), or “Average Value.” Prohibited. Mentioning floors, ceilings, or average values is banned. No “grand prizes” or empty spots are allowed.

2. Exceptions: Professionally Sealed Surprise Products

The only time a pre-packaged, hidden item is allowed is if it is a Professionally Sealed Surprise Product (e.g., factory-sealed Pokémon card packs, Funko Mystery Minis, Disney Blind Boxes).

  • The product must be on Whatnot’s officially approved Identified Product List.
  • Custom manufacturers or independent repackers must submit a formal application and undergo third-party audits to get approved on this list before they can be sold.

3. How to Run a Compliant “Mystery” Show

To recreate the excitement of a mystery show without risking an account ban, structure the stream using the following Surprise Set Feature guidelines:

  1. Display Everything Openly: Ditch the physical bags. Lay all available items out on your desk or shelves so they are fully visible on screen.

  2. Publish an Exact Inventory Checklist: In the description of your Surprise Set listing, type out the exact pool of items.

    Example:

    • Product 1: Loungefly Disney Mini Backpack (New with tags)
    • Product 2: Coach Canvas Tote Bag (Gently used)
  3. Keep the Category Identical: Ensure every single item in that specific Surprise Set is of the exact same product type (e.g., all backpacks or all wallets).

  4. Utilize the App Randomizer: Select Surprise Sets as your selling format. When a buyer purchases a spot, let the built-in digital randomizer spin on screen to assign them their item.

  5. Reveal and Pack: Once the app selects the item, pick it up from your display, show it to the camera, and pack it for the buyer.

⚠️ Policy Enforcement: Attempting to sell old-school mystery bags under alternative names like “surprise bundles” or “blind bags” will result in Whatnot removing the listings, issuing account penalties, or permanently banning the seller profile.
